The Coast Guard is the maritime equivalent of the cavalry, riding over the horizon in either helicopters or boats to rescue those in distress.

It’s a welcome sight for those in trouble on the Gulf of Mexico.

But what happens when the rescuers need rescuing?

They rescue themselves.

The Coast Guard Cutter Pompano, an 87-foot patrol boat homeported in Gulfport, Miss., recently went out to sea to run through shipboard emergency drills.

When it comes to protecting yourself, you can never have too much practice.
