Once a year Master Chief Petty Officer Lloyd Pierce, the Eighth District Command Master Chief, receives numerous nominations from units all around the district, nominating individuals for Enlisted Person of the Year.
“This is a process that starts off on the deck plates of a cutter, in a boatswain’s hole at a station or in an office at a Marine Safety Detachment or Marine Safety Unit,” said Pierce. “It starts with a person that will never let someone down, someone that is always there.”
The recognition starts with a member doing their job and going above and beyond their duties. The member is first nominated by a crewmember at the lowest level and then the process goes through parent commands, then major commands and eventually the nomination ends up in Pierce’s hands. Next, the nominations are voted on by the Chief’s Mess, which includes more than 40 units throughout the Eighth District.

Some would say that reserve members aren’t seen very much and sometimes go unnoticed but they can be defined as hard working and will be there when called upon. Chosen this year for the district’s Reserve Person of the Year is Petty Officer 3rd Class Robert C. Hardin, a marine science technician assigned to Sector Mobile, Ala., Incident Management Division.
